What is the lifespan of a feral cat. Feral cats usually stay away from humans as much as possible. They often join other feral cats in a colony since there is protection in numbers. Feral colonies are established in areas that provide food water and safety.
A colony is lucky if it has a human caretaker who brings food and water every day. Feral colony caretakers are usually cat-loving concerned humans who want to help feral cats. A true feral cat is an unsocialized cat meaning its never lived with humans and has a natural distrust of them.
Ferals are cats in their natural wild state and they exhibit behaviors close to those of their wild ancestors. Cheetahs lions tigers etc. Being wild they prefer the safety of the their secret hiding places to the convenience of a comfy chair and human interaction.
Although it is not fully known why some cats go away to die its likely that when our cats become very old and feel unwell they prefer to be alone and rest. The time within the ferals will start to trust us is different it may be 3 weeks maybe months. Once the cats leave they may never want to go back into the cage. After two more weeks the cats should be comfortable in their new home and the cage and supplies can be taken away.
Caring for your barn cat is as easy as providing fresh food and water daily. Some barn cat caregivers keep litter pans inside their barns but often are rarely used. Never rely on outdoor cats to sustain themselves on.
To my knowledge you did not have the feral cat colonies established by cat lovers in state and county parks that you do today.
